GEORGIA INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP (GIL) CLASS OF 2016
The Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) and the GALEO Latino Community Development Fund were established to increase the leadership development and civic engagement of the Latino community across Georgia. In addition, GALEO was created to increase representation of Latino/Hispanic elected and appointed officials, to proactively address the issues and needs of the Latino community, and to engage the Latino/Hispanic community in the democratic and policy process across the State of Georgia.
The GALEO Latino Community Development Fund has implemented the GALEO Institute for Leadership to focus upon the leadership development of the Latino community across our state. As part of the GALEO Institute for Leadership, we have formed a strategic partnership with the University of Georgia’s Fanning Institute to expand and develop our joint efforts for their Community Leadership Program.
University of Georgia, Fanning Institute: Founded in 1982, the Fanning Institute is named for Vice President and Professor Emeritus J.W. Fanning, whom many consider to be the father of leadership in Georgia. His leadership and community development legacy is carried on today through the Fanning Institute’s continued vision of building community capacity.
The curriculum being utilized for the GALEO Institute for Leadership will be the University of Georgia’s Fanning Institute 4th Edition CLP (revised 2006). The curriculum provides eight modules designed to assist participants in:
Becoming more knowledgeable about themselves, leadership practices and their communities;
Developing skills needed to assist them in becoming stronger community leaders;
Coming together to use their newly acquired knowledge and enhanced leadership skills to address community issues, needs, problems and challenges;
Exercising leadership by engaging themselves in activities and undertaking projects to improve their communities.
In 2016 we will continue with our year-round cycle, using the Fanning Institute’s Community Leadership Program modules and coupling them with complementary activities to further promote the leadership development of our community leaders. Latinos are a growing segment of Georgia’s community and we have a responsibility to lead.
Participants from ALL backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to apply.
The GIL schedule commitment is required of all participants in order to graduate; attendance to all sessions is mandatory. In addition, participants will be required to carry out a Group Community Project, which will be developed together with their fellow participants and presented to the group during one of the sessions.
Only ONE excused absence will be allowed for the duration of the program and it must be due to extreme extenuating circumstances; subsequent absences will deny you the ability to receive your graduation certificate, but you can continue to attend sessions and receive a certificate of participation.
This program will only be conducted in English.

That participation dues for the GALEO Institute for Leadership 2016 are as follows:
Limited scholarships are available for 50% of the fee. Financial necessity will have to be documented and demonstrated. Please contact Samuel Aguilar, email@example.com for details. If a scholarship is granted, attendance to ALL sessions will be required or the scholarship will be forfeited and the recipient will have the pay the remainder of the dues.
Participation dues are payable upon the commencement of the program, in March 2016. Payment in installments will be acceptable upon approval by the Program Manager.
